You Are Here: Update

I've completed Phase 1 - I have added every theatre/production company I could find (see the expanded list, and scroll down to the comments and give mental props to Nick, Bilal, and Kris for their help). Seriously, if you're involved in a theatre company I don't have on this list, you may want to think about your marketing plan - because I've devoted a good portion of my life for the last six months to looking for you.

You may notice I've rescinded my rather capricious injunction on theatres operating in "the far suburbs." This is for a couple of reasons: first of all, I've realized that nobody's ever tried to do this - catalog all Chicago-area theatre - so why not go big? Secondly, I been in an interesting conversation with none other than Carrie Kaufman (prayers do get answered!), which I hope will allow me to add those theatres in relatively painlessly, and may set the stage for some cool stuff down the road.

Amazingly, I was able to find a lot of information on all but a tiny handful of the companies I was looking for. If anybody can shed light on the workings of the following groups, please let me know - otherwise they're just lonely names in my database. I got most of my information off of company websites, but these folks don't seem to have a web presence. Are they defunct? Are they hiding? Lemme know!

Big Theater
Box Theatre Group, The
Bricklayers Theatre Company
Not Waiting Productions
People's Theatre of Chicago
Remarcable Productions
Time of Your Life Players
Zombie Fortress Arts Collective

The next step is to start filling in holes: fleshing out company info with mission statements, founded years, leadership, etc, and to start hanging some production info off these companies. TOC, expect to see your traffic spike shortly as I cull info from your archives.

Big Theater is the brainchild of Ellie Heyman and playwright Joe Tracz and some other neat folks, and they did some pretty kick ass cafe-specific plays written for the spaces they performed in in the past three? seasons. Ellie just called me a few seconds ago, but as I wasn't able to answer the phone, I'll need to get back to you to see if they're defunct (Joe's now out of town, and Ellie may be considering grad work)

The only links on this mini-list I was able to find are:

http://www.peoplestheaterchicago.org/
which shows they are quite active..

and Zombie Fortress Arts just updated their myspace blog: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=129071961

What do you think of an imdb.com like format for this sort of thing?

If you're extending out to the burbs, I would like to mention Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, which operates out of College of DuPage but puts on really stellar, quality shows way out there in Glen Ellyn.

If you're including Lincolnshire/Glen Ellyn and environs then these should also be included:
Open Door Rep - Oak Park
Citidal Theatre - Lake Forest
Greenman Theatre - Elmhurst
Hidden Talent Theatre - Arlington Heights
Metropolis Performing ARts Centre - Arlington Heights
Theatre on the Hill - Bolingbrook
Beverly theatre Guild - Beverly
Kirk Players - Mundelein
First Street Playhouse - Batavia
Steel Beam Theater - St. Charles

I forgot two others that I should have remembered the first time:

Camenae Ensemble Theatre and Striding Lion InterArts Workshop.

I should have noticed these absences immediately, as my wife is an associate member of both companies. Good thing she didn't know I'd forgotten them.
